What is IELTS Syllabus? What does it consist of?

International English Language Testing System or simply IELTS is a test for language proficiency. The score of IELTS is a measuring yard for several countries that check the proficiency of a candidate in English language. The United Kingdom, New Zealand, Australia, USA and Canada are the popular countries that consider IELTS score.

There are two modules of IELTS:
  • ·         Academic
  • ·         General Training

IELTS Score helps 3 kinds of aspirants.

·         Those who wish to study abroad: The first kind of candidates is the ones who aspire for higher education abroad.
·         Those who wish to work abroad: The second lot is of those who wish to make a career abroad, mostly in the above mentioned nations.
·         Those who wish to immigrate: The third category is of the immigrants. These are the people who aspire to move abroad for a better life. It is mandatory for such people to clear IELTS.

Taking the above 3 categories in consideration, Academic Module furnishes the requirement of the first variety and GT or General Training satisfies the needs of the second category. There is a slight difference in the materials used and the questions asked in the two modules.

The pattern of both the modules is same, however, it must be noted that the type of questions asked will differ.

The 4 sections or skills that are tested in these modules are:
  • ·         Listening
  • ·         Reading
  • ·         Writing
  • ·         Speaking

What is the difference in questioning?
The Academic format is designed for students aspiring for admission in English speaking universities. Therefore, the question used in the 4 sections will lean towards technical language. This will include questioning through journals, advertisements, and other comprehension materials.

The General Training format is designed for candidates aiming for a future in English speaking countries like the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Its focus will always be on the survival in social and workplace environment of English speaking countries. The level or standard of difficulty will definitely a lesser than Academic module.
