When it comes to higher education most of us would prefer an American university but Dhairya Badlani chose to be different. She opted for the Canadian university named University of Waterloo for the course, Master of Management Science. We got in touch with her to know her insights on studying abroad how she bagged a seat for herself in this coveted university.
When did you make up your mind about going for an overseas education?
Going abroad for higher education was not a sudden decision. I had completed my graduation in 2012, joined TCS and worked for more than 4 years to gain the much needed work experience. Once that was done, I quit the job and took an entire year to understand all the application procedures and apply.
Was Canada your only choice?
From the beginning itself, I was confident about which country she would like to study. I had many relatives who lived in Canada and apart from that, the tuition fee was much lower when compared with the American universities. The university was of more importance than the country itself and University of Waterloo had better ranking for my chosen course when compared with other universities.
How did you go about the application procedure? Was it difficult for you?
I had done my homework well and also knew the process but I still felt the need to contact an education counselor since I was unsure about the documents and transcripts involved so I contacted IDP for help.
I gave the IELTS test since I had applied only to those universities where only IELTS was required. I wasn't averse to giving GRE but since it was not required, I did not apply for it. I scored Band 8 in IELTS, I had prepared for the test on my own taking reference from IELTS practice material and the official websites, ielts.org and ieltsessentials.com. In fact, two weeks from the test date, I studied as long as 16 hours a day.
How did you get to know about IDP's study abroad counseling services?
One of my friends was already in touch with IDP for her application process and she had a great experience with them. I decided to trust her word and avail IDP's services. I filled out the enquiry form on their website and received a call instantly. I was referred to the counselor whom I met for the first time at their registered office in Chandigarh. On my first interaction with the counselor, Anita, I was impressed with her knowledge and the way she guided me with the application process. So, without giving any further thought, I decided to go with them and I am glad I did.
Were you apprehensive about IDP's study abroad counseling services after you registered with them?
The feedback I had received from my friends was quite positive and my first meeting with Anita had turned out pretty well. Therefore, I had no second thoughts before or after registering with them. However, I'll be honest that I was quite apprehensive about the suggestions coming for my SOP (statement of purpose) and recommendation letters but I was reassured by the team that I will always receive the right advice. And guess what, it really worked out for me.
I am happy about the fact that the counsellor helped me greatly to shortlist the universities and courses and was also reminded from time to time about the deadlines.
