International Students to Pay Increase SEVIS Fee for US admissions!


On 23rd May 2019, the United States Department of Homeland Security announced an increase in I-901 SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) Fees. According to the official US Homeland Security website, the changes in the SEVIS fee are to come in effect from 12:00 am EDT 24th June 2019. Here’re is all you need to know about the proliferated SEVIS fees.


Fee changes for F1 and M1 students

24th June 2019 onwards all international students who will apply to US universities via SEVIS will have to pay a 75 percent increased I-901 SEVIS Fee of $350 instead of the current SEVIS fee which was $200.  This is applicable for all F and M international students.

What are F1 and M1 students? 

International students who enter the USA for the sole purpose to study are categorised under F, M and J.

F visa students are the international students apply to study in the USA above a bachelor’s degree level, it can be an undergraduate degree, postgraduate degree, or a doctorate degree or any other professional degree at an accredited U.S. university or a college.

The M visa students are international students who pursue vocational, non-academic or technical programs and training in the USA.

Whereas, the J students are exchange students.

Fee changes J exchange students

The Department of Homeland Security has increased the full SEVIS Fee for J exchange visitors from $180 to $220.

However, the $35 I-901 SEVIS Fee for J exchange visitors in the au pair, camp counsellor and summer work or travel program participant categories remains unaffected that is
