How to prepare for IELTS?

If a person wishes to study or work in a country where English is used for administrative purpose and in educational institutions as the medium of instruction such USA, UK, New Zealand, Canada and Australia, then he or she is required to pass an English Language proficiency test. It varies from country to country regarding the language proficiency test because some prefer IELTS such UK and New Zealand and some prefer TOEFL such as USA.

IELTS tests the key aspects of the language proficiency such as listening, reading, writing and speaking.

There are two branches: Academic and General Training.

Academic is for those who are looking forward to completing their higher education and

General Training is for those who are aiming for a career.

In this article, we will briefly discuss about how to prepare for IELTS.

·         Listening
There are four parts with ten questions each. This 40 mark test requires you to jot down the answers in thirty minutes. The audio will be played once and ten minutes will be given to transfer your answers to the answer sheet. Therefore, make sure you listen as many audios possible.

·         Reading
While preparing for this, focus on the branch you are aiming for because the difficulty levels of Academic and General are different. 60 minutes and 40 questions is your target. Academic module may include excerpts from journals, books or newspapers and General may include advertisements or magazines.

·         Writing
Again, the difficulty level differs between the two formats. Academic level is slightly more difficult when compared with the General so prepare accordingly.

·         Speaking
This can be a conversation about your hobbies, your life in general and your aspirations. Be confident and read every day to increase your vocabulary. You can use simple sentences but make sure they are grammatically correct.

This test might seem a bit daunting but don’t let that come between your goals. Go ahead and do well!
