What is IELTS Test format?

Before going ahead with any kind of IELTS test preparation, it is necessary to familiarise oneself with the test format. Just like you acquaint yourself with the syllabus while preparing your regular subjects, it is absolutely important to familiarise with the IELTS syllabus or format. IELTS tests you on the 4 skills of English language proficiency i.e. listening, reading, writing and speaking. Let’s understand each of them in detail.

Listening – The first section of the IELTS test will be listening. This will have time duration of 30 minutes and is divided into 4 parts. The 4 sections include a total of 40 questions which tests the candidate of his/her ability to comprehend language, views, ideas, and information. The test will comprise various accents used in different regions of English speaking and non-English speaking countries.

-      Reading – The next tests will be testing one on their reading abilities and will be of 60 minutes.  The reading section of the academic module will have more of an analytical approach while the GT module will include topics from daily life.

-      Writing – The writing test lasts for 60 minutes and assigns the candidate 2 tasks. These tasks may include writing views or narration. This can be in formal or informal style.

-      Speaking – The next test i.e. the speaking test lasts for 11-14 minutes. It is a face-to-face interaction with the examiner. All the responses in this section are recorded.

The above pointers will help you prepare for the test in a better manner as knowing the format makes you prepared for the questions you are going to encounter during the test. Regular practice will be extremely helpful in getting a good band score in IELTS.
