Top tips to score high in your upcoming IELTS Reading Test

Reading is considered the most scoring among all four IELTS test components; it's scoring, not easy!

How to score higher in IELTS reading?

Develop reading speed- To be able to score at least a 7 in the IELTS Reading test, candidates should be able to understand the meaning of a passage without entirely reading it. Of the 60 minutes assigned in the test, you develop a strategy to read one passage in 5-7 minutes, so you can quickly extract the accurate central idea from the text and finish the entire part of the test in 20 minutes.

Don’t read everything- You must also practice IELTS reading skills and strategies such as skimming, scanning so you can save your time and quickly skim and scan the main ideas and keywords like, a name, or a date etc. So while practising IELTS sample papers, you must first quickly skim the passage, and then extract the main theme by scanning keywords. Remember, as you scan the text underline all the keywords which you think are important and are related to reading questions.

Follow all instructions- Another extremely important factor is to make sure that you read all the instructions over the question before answering. Don’t forget to read what’s asked in the question, and then start skimming for answers. If you won’t answer the question as asked, you may lose scores for not following the instructions.

Reread your answers- When you write your answers make sure spare 5 minutes to re-read each one of them before finally submitting the test. While rechecking your answers you must look for any possible grammatical mistakes or spelling errors. You should check that you have answered all questions properly and as required.

Attempt all questions – IELTS has no negative marking for wrong answers, so even if you are unsure and think you do not know the answer to a question, you should still attempt it. First, answer the questions you know and at the end attempt all the questions you may have left. At times a guessed answer can also be correct.

Best tips for IELTS 2019 exam to score a band 8 or above!

Want to score an overall 7 or above in IELTS? Read some useful IELTS advice and tips that can help you achieve this goal.

Switch to IELTS on Computer

1. Be realistic about your IELTS goals and register for the test accordingly - You should choose your IELTS exam date when you are sure you are ready and fully prepared to take the test. Don't be in a haste just to get over with the exam. Remember, it can take from one to three months to perfect your English language for IELTS.

2. Always create a study plan and follow it - Preparing for IELTS with a study plan is the best thing you can do, especially if you are working, or, have other commitments. Device a study plan that focuses on your weak areas and equally balances the sections you are strong at.

3. Make sure you are focused for the entire duration of your exam - A lot of candidates are losing scores because they are not attentive in the exam or are used to sit in the exam for long durations. You must prepare yourself for exact exam conditions. For instance, if you are not used to writing for an hour, you can either choose the computer-delivered test, or practice in a way that you can write in the IELTS test without deteriorating your energy for other sections of the test.

4. Practice on IELTS answer sheets - Preparing under test conditions also include practising on IELTS answer sheets, don’t forget that. You can download free IELTS answer sheets from a number of online IELTS sources.

5. Understand IELTS score guide - Before you sit for the IELTS exam you must get familiar to how IELTS test is scored so you can actually make sure where you are headed. You can start by researching for IELTS band descriptors and analyse how each section, i.e. listening, writing, reading and speaking are scored and how should you prepare according to the band descriptors for each of the sections.
